Social selling
Building relationships with prospects on social networks, especially professional ones, by sharing expert content and talking personally rather than pitching directly. It works best in B2B and advisory services.

What it means
Social selling means building relationships with prospects on social networks, especially professional ones, by sharing expert content and communicating personally. The aim is not an immediate sale but trust, so that the customer turns to the seller when a concrete need comes up.
The approach rests on the fact that a B2B buyer today makes much of the decision alone, before ever contacting a supplier. Whoever helps them during that time with useful insights has an edge over a company that only reaches out with a cold call or a mass e-mail.
Social selling overlaps with content marketing and inbound marketing, but it is more personal. The content is shared not by the brand but by a specific person, such as a director, a consultant or a salesperson, and the relationship forms between people rather than logos.
How it works in practice
In advisory services such as accounting or tax advice, regularly sharing short explanations of legislative changes, practical tips and answers to frequent questions works well. Such content shows expertise without feeling like an advertisement.
Contacts who react to the content or start a conversation are worth recording in the CRM as leads and followed up. This helps track where a deal came from and pick up the conversation at the right moment, instead of waiting for the customer to remember the firm.
With larger clients, social selling combines with account-based marketing: the seller picks specific companies and, within them, the people who decide on purchases. Over time the seller builds the relationship through comments, relevant articles and an offer of help with a specific problem.
What to watch out for
The most common mistake is sending a sales pitch right after a connection request is accepted. It feels intrusive and lowers the willingness to keep talking. Patient lead nurturing and offering value before price comes up bring better results.
Personal data protection rules apply when working with contacts from social networks. Bulk copying of profiles into a database and sending unsolicited commercial messages may breach GDPR as well as the platform's own terms.
