What it means

Inbound marketing is an approach in which a company attracts customers with useful content, SEO and social media so they find it themselves, rather than reaching out with ads or calls. HubSpot popularised the term as the opposite of traditional outbound marketing.

Its foundation is content marketing: articles, guides, videos, calculators or webinars that answer prospective customers' questions. Someone looking for a solution who finds a quality answer from a company is more willing to trust it and buy from it later.

Inbound marketing builds trust and a steady long-term flow of enquiries. Unlike advertising, which stops working when the budget is switched off, quality content brings traffic for years after publication, though it takes longer to build.

How it works in practice

The customer journey has stages: attract through content and search, engage with a lead magnet in exchange for contact details, develop the relationship through lead nurturing e-mails, and finally convert and delight customers so they recommend the company.

Marketing automation links the stages by sending the right content at the right time based on visitor behaviour. For example, after downloading a VAT guide, a visitor receives a series of e-mails with further tips and an offer of a consultation.

Inbound is often combined with outbound activities such as advertising or cold calling. Ads can speed up the reach of content, and salespeople can contact people who have shown interest, which is more effective than approaching complete strangers.

What to watch out for

Inbound marketing requires patience and consistency. The first SEO results usually take months, and a company that stops after a few articles loses its investment. A content plan and long-term commitment are essential.

Collecting contacts through lead magnets and following up must comply with the GDPR and electronic communication rules. Without valid consent for marketing e-mails, automation may bring complaints and fines rather than customers.
