What it means

Branding is the long-term work on what customers think of a company and what they expect from it. A brand is more than a logo: it is made up of the name, visual identity, tone of voice, values, the value proposition and above all the experience customers actually have with the company.

A strong brand saves money. A customer who knows and trusts a company decides faster, compares prices less and recommends it to others. Customer acquisition costs fall and the company can afford a higher margin than an unknown competitor with the same product.

A brand is built through consistency. The same name, colours and tone on the website, invoices, emails and social media, and above all the same quality of service. One bad experience published in a review can wipe out years of advertising.

How it works in practice

The first step is protection. We recommend checking the name and logo against the register and filing them as a trademark before investing in them. Otherwise, years later, a company may find it cannot use the brand because someone else owns it.

Branding costs such as design, campaigns, content marketing or sponsorship are usually deductible in the year they arise. A brand built by the company itself is not shown as an asset on the balance sheet; its value appears only when the business is sold, as part of goodwill.

In smaller companies the owner is often the brand. We advise clients not to let the brand rest on a single person, because its value is hard to transfer when the business is sold or handed to a successor.

What to watch out for

A common mistake is changing the look and message with every new agency. Customers remember a brand only after many repeated contacts, and constant change blurs it. A change makes sense when the company changes, not when management is simply bored.

The second risk is promising in communication what the service will not deliver. Customers quickly spot the gap between brand and reality and publish it. A brand should describe who we are, not who we would like to be.
