What it means

Brand awareness is the extent to which target customers know a brand and recall it when thinking about a product or service. There is unaided awareness, when people recall the brand on their own, and aided awareness, when they recognise it from a list or by its logo.

Awareness is the first step of the customer journey. If nobody knows the company, it never makes the shortlist, however good its offer. In trust-based services such as accounting or law, what often decides is whether the customer remembers the firm at the moment of need.

It is built over time through advertising, content marketing, PR, social media presence and referrals. Awareness alone is not enough; it must be matched by clear positioning so customers link the brand with the right benefit.

How it works in practice

It is measured through surveys of the target group, branded search volume, direct website traffic, and mentions in the media and on social networks. Growth in branded searches is a good sign that campaigns work, even when their effect cannot be tied directly to a particular order.

For small firms, a narrower focus works well: being known in a specific region or industry rather than to everyone. Regular expert content, talks, events and partnerships build awareness more cheaply than broad advertising.

SEO and awareness reinforce each other. People click more often on results from brands they know, and branded searches signal trustworthiness to search engines. A strong brand therefore also improves the performance of performance marketing.

What to watch out for

High awareness without positive perception can hurt. If people know the brand mainly from bad reviews or a scandal, recognition does not turn into purchases. Satisfaction, measured for example by NPS, and reputation are therefore tracked alongside awareness.

Investment in awareness pays back slowly and is hard to measure. A company that judges marketing only by immediate conversions often cuts it, and then wonders why its performance campaigns, which were feeding on that awareness, become less effective.
