Correcting an accounting entry
A change to a transaction already booked, made by a reversal or an additional entry and never by overwriting. The correction has to show the original content, who made it and when.

What it means
Correcting an accounting entry means touching a transaction that is already booked. The Accounting Act permits it only in a way that leaves the original content traceable: nothing is erased or overwritten, it is reversed or topped up by a difference entry.
Every correction records who made it and when. It is not a correction of a document: a wrong invoice is settled by a corrective invoice, whereas here it is the accounting entry in the books that changes.
A correction deals with an error, an entry that was wrong the moment it was booked. It is not the closing entry that adds accruals and deferrals, a provision or an impairment allowance: those are a normal part of the close, they change a valuation or the period an item belongs to, and the original entry stays valid.
How it works in practice
Two techniques are used: a full reversal of the original entry followed by the correct one, or an additional entry for the difference. The support is an internal document showing the reason and the link to the original transaction.
Timing decides. Until the statements are approved the books can be reopened; after approval a prior-year error is booked in the current period, and where it moved the tax base, an amended return is filed for the original year.
At the monthly reconciliation of the bank statement and the accounts sub-ledger we find a payment allocated to the wrong customer. We fix it in the same month by reposting between the partners’ sub-accounts, so the balances agree and no reminder goes to a customer who has paid while the real debtor gets none.
What to watch out for
The expensive fix is editing the line straight in the software. The original entry vanishes, an inspection cannot tie the books to the filed return and treats the records as unsupported: the expense leaves the tax base and late-payment interest follows the assessment.
The error is fixed in the books but not in the reports that have already left them. Where it moved VAT, unless the return and the control statement are corrected too, the ledger and the filed data drift apart, the tax administrator’s matching flags the gap, and instead of one correction the company ends up explaining a whole period in reply to a request.
