What it means
A keyword is a word or phrase people type into a search engine, such as accounting for an s. r. o. or type B tax return. For SEO and paid advertising it is the link between what someone is looking for and the page meant to answer them.
Keywords are grouped by intent: informational, when someone wants an answer; navigational, when they are looking for a particular company; and transactional, when they want to buy or order. Longer, more specific phrases, the so-called long tail, are searched less often, but the people behind them are closer to a decision.
Search engines today look for meaning, not matching words. A page does not need to repeat the phrase; it needs to answer the intent behind it well, and answer engines and language models, the target of AEO, reinforce this logic further.
How it works in practice
When building a website and content marketing we start with keyword research: what people search for, how often and in which language. In Slovakia that means considering Slovak and the other languages of customers, because the same service is searched for differently.
Every important topic should have its own page, such as a landing page for a service or an article for a question. When two pages compete for the same phrase, the search engine cannot tell which to show and both rank worse.
In paid search, PPC, advertisers bid on keywords and pay per click, CPC. Campaign data and web analytics show which phrases bring enquiries, and we then strengthen those in organic content too.
What to watch out for
Cramming keywords into text, known as keyword stuffing, does harm today. Search engines demote text written for a robot rather than a person, and visitors leave it, so the conversion rate falls too.
A mistake is focusing only on the highest-volume phrases. A general word like accounting has huge competition and unclear intent, while a precise phrase with less volume often brings more real customers. When choosing, we therefore also consider local SEO and which stage of the sales funnel the customer is at.
