What it means
Off-page SEO covers activities outside your own website that increase its credibility with search engines. These are mainly earning quality backlinks, brand mentions in the media and on professional sites, reviews and profiles in directories and maps.
It complements on-page SEO, which deals with the content and structure of the site itself, and technical SEO. While a company controls everything on its own site, it influences off-page factors only indirectly through how others perceive it, and results appear more slowly.
Search engines assess whether trustworthy sources talk about the company and whether the brand is recognised in its field. This relates to E-E-A-T, experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, which cannot simply be claimed on your own site but must be visible elsewhere too.
How it works in practice
The foundation is link building through quality content, partnerships and PR. A company can write expert articles for the media, provide comments to journalists, speak at events or work with professional organisations. Each such activity can yield both a link and a mention.
For local SEO, the company's maps profile, consistent directory data and customer reviews matter. Actively asking satisfied clients for reviews and responding to all reviews, including negative ones, builds trust with both search engines and potential customers.
Unlinked brand mentions also count, as they help search engines associate the brand with a topic. Social media do not directly affect rankings, but they spread content that may then earn links. Results are monitored with link and mention analysis tools.
What to watch out for
Buying links, fake reviews or joining link exchange networks breach search engine guidelines, and fake reviews also breach consumer protection law. The risk of penalties outweighs any short-term gain.
Off-page SEO is pointless without a good website. If pages are not useful, fast and well structured, even strong links will not secure lasting rankings. The best results come from combining quality content, sound technical foundations and naturally earned authority.
