Business model canvas
A one-page map of the business model: customers, value, channels, resources, costs and revenue. Its point is to make assumptions comparable with what the books actually show.

What it means
The canvas is a single page of nine boxes: customer segments, the value proposition, channels, relationships, revenue, resources, activities, partners and costs. The whole model is visible at once.
Unlike a business plan it is not written to be read by an investor but to be rewritten the moment an assumption fails. That is why it belongs on one page, not in a thirty-page document.
A canvas is not a SWOT analysis. SWOT weighs the company’s strengths and weaknesses and its surroundings; the canvas describes the mechanics: who pays, for what, through which channel, and what the company must have to deliver it. The right half of the page is about customers and revenue, the left about what it costs, and the gap between them is what the company keeps.
How it works in practice
It earns its keep when the boxes carry figures from the books: real margin by segment, actual fixed costs, average order value. Then it becomes clear which segment carries the company and which drags it.
In consulting we use it as a bridge between the owner’s picture of the business and what the statements say. Often the loudest part of the business turns out to have the thinnest contribution margin.
When setting up an s. r. o. or launching a new service, fill in the canvas before settling the registered scope of business. The channel and partner boxes show whether the company will sell into other EU countries or need a warehouse or subcontractors, and that drives VAT registration and how the books are kept.
What to watch out for
A canvas filled in over an hour and filed away is not a strategy. It only means something when each box produces a decision with a date and an owner, and someone returns to it six months later.
A company selling both to trade buyers and to end consumers needs two canvases, because channels, relationships and costs differ. One combined picture blends two models and hides which of them has unhealthy unit economics. Decisions then rest on an average that is true for no segment at all.
