What it means
The State Treasury is the public finance management system in which state and certain other public institutions hold their accounts. It works like a bank for the state: it pools public sector money in one place and allows its liquidity and payments to be managed efficiently.
Taxes, customs duty, court fees and other payments to the state are made through Treasury accounts. For a business owner the key point is that tax payments go to accounts of tax offices held in the State Treasury, which has its own bank code in the Slovak banking system.
The Treasury also manages the state's debt and liquidity and helps finance spending approved in the state budget. It is run by the Ministry of Finance and is not available to ordinary companies as a bank where they could hold their own account.
How it works in practice
Each taxpayer has a dedicated account for tax payments, whose number can be found in the personal online zone of the Financial Administration. Every payment must include the variable symbol, which identifies the type of tax and the period so that the payment is allocated correctly.
A wrong variable symbol or account is a common reason why a payment is not credited to the right tax, even though the money left on time. The tax office may then show arrears, so it is worth checking the details before sending the payment order, ideally using the prefilled template from the portal.
The same principle applies to paying court fees, administrative fees or customs duty, which go to the relevant authority's account at the Treasury. For payments from abroad, the Treasury's IBAN and BIC code are used, as published on the relevant authority's website.
What to watch out for
A payment counts as made only on the day it is credited to the tax authority's account, not the day it leaves the payer's bank. When paying at the last minute, interbank processing time must be allowed for, otherwise late payment interest may arise for a few days.
Fraudsters occasionally send fake tax payment demands with their own account number. The genuine account number for tax payments should always be checked in the personal online zone or on the Financial Administration's official website, never just from an e-mail.
