Variable symbol
A numeric reference on a payment that matches it to a specific invoice or liability, usually the invoice number. Payments to the tax office, the Social Insurance Agency and health insurers require a set format, and a wrong symbol leaves the payment unmatched.

What it means
The variable symbol is a numeric reference of up to ten digits entered with a bank transfer to identify the payment. The recipient uses it to match the incoming payment with a specific invoice, order or liability. On invoices, the invoice number is most commonly used as the variable symbol.
Slovak payments also use constant and specific symbols alongside it, but for ordinary business-to-business payments today it is mainly the variable symbol that is required. In SEPA payments banks transmit it in structured form together with the IBAN and the payee’s name.
For payments to the state, the variable symbol has a prescribed format. For taxes its structure depends on the type of tax and period, and the correct format is shown in the personal taxpayer account on the financial administration portal. The Social Insurance Agency and health insurers have their own rules, usually including the payer’s identifier.
How it works in practice
We advise clients always to show the variable symbol clearly on their invoices, together with a payment QR code that transfers the details automatically. This reduces typing errors and speeds up matching in the accounts.
When processing bank statements, the accounting software matches payments by variable symbol against open receivables and payables. Payments with no symbol or a wrong one must be matched manually, which takes time and, with many transactions, leads to errors in the ledgers.
For tax and contribution payments, we check that the client uses the correct symbol for the type of payment and period. Income tax, VAT and advance payments use different formats, and a wrong symbol can result in the payment being credited to the wrong tax.
What to watch out for
The most frequent problem is a payment to the tax office with an incorrect variable symbol. The money arrives but remains unmatched or is credited to another tax, while arrears with interest accrue on the correct one. Such a payment must be fixed by requesting a transfer or reallocation.
When paying several invoices with one transfer, send the supplier a breakdown of which invoices it covers. Otherwise they cannot match them and may send reminders for invoices that have already been paid.
