What it means

Search Console is a free search engine tool for site owners that shows which queries pages appear for, how many clicks they get, their average position and click-through rate. It also flags problems with indexing, security or mobile usability.

Unlike web analytics, which measures what people do on the site, Search Console shows what happens before the click, right on the results page. It is the only direct view of how the search engine sees the site and which pages it considers relevant.

The tool lets you submit an XML sitemap, request a recrawl of a specific URL, validate structured data and monitor Core Web Vitals from real visitors. Other search engines offer similar tools.

How it works in practice

After launch, ownership is verified, for example through a DNS record, and the sitemap is submitted. The indexing report is worth checking regularly: which pages are indexed, which are not and why, such as duplication, redirects or content quality.

The performance report reveals queries with many impressions but a low click-through rate, where a better title and meta description often help. Pages ranking around position ten are candidates for content improvements that could lift them onto the first page.

Search Console is the basis of any SEO audit. After a major change such as a migration or redesign, watch for indexing errors and falling impressions so problems are fixed before they hit revenue.

What to watch out for

Search Console data are sampled and some queries are withheld for privacy reasons. Totals may therefore not match web analytics exactly, and comparisons must account for the different measurement methods.

Access to the tool gives considerable power over the site, such as temporarily removing pages from results. Access should be granted only to trusted people and revoked when an agency or employee leaves.
