What it means
A SERP is the search engine results page shown after a query is entered. Besides the classic organic results, it contains ads, maps with local businesses, featured snippets, related questions, products, images, videos and, increasingly, AI-generated answers.
The layout of the SERP determines how many clicks even the top-ranked page receives. If four ads, a map and an AI answer sit above the organic results, the first organic result may be below the fold and its click-through rate far lower than in a plain list of links.
Some searches end without a click because the answer appears right in the results, known as zero-click search. With the rise of AI search, this trend is growing and changing how websites earn traffic.
How it works in practice
When choosing keywords, look at what the SERP for that query looks like. If ads and a map dominate, an organic position will bring fewer visits; if questions and snippets appear, structured content with clear answers has a chance to gain visibility.
For local services such as an accounting practice, the business profile in maps is key, because the map appears high for queries with local intent. Rich results with ratings and prices make a listing more attractive.
For queries where AI answers directly, it pays to become a cited source. Clear, trustworthy and well-structured content with concrete facts, which AI systems can process easily and credit as a source, helps.
What to watch out for
SERP positions are not the same for everyone. Results vary by location, device, language and user history, so manual checks from your own computer can mislead. Data from Search Console and rank-tracking tools are more reliable.
Search engines keep changing SERP layouts, and new features can cut traffic overnight even for pages holding the same position. Diversifying traffic sources and building the brand reduce dependence on a single channel.
