What it means

SARIO is the Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency, a state agency that helps foreign investors enter Slovakia and Slovak companies export. It provides information on locations, labour, legislation and investment aid and connects companies with potential partners.

For foreign investors, SARIO is often the first point of contact. It helps choose industrial parks and property, explains the conditions of regional investment aid and makes introductions to local authorities, universities and suppliers.

For Slovak companies it supports exports: it organises participation in trade fairs, business missions and matchmaking events and provides information on foreign markets. For smaller firms this eases first steps into new markets they would struggle to enter alone.

How it works in practice

A company considering a new market can use market research, a database of foreign enquiries or support for attending a trade fair. Some services are free, others partly paid; conditions change with the programmes currently running.

A foreign investor considering a plant or service centre in Slovakia receives location comparisons, data on wages and labour availability and help preparing an investment aid application. The decision on aid itself is taken by the government under state aid rules.

When using support, remember that investment aid comes with commitments, such as creating a certain number of jobs or maintaining the investment. Failing to meet them can mean repaying the aid, so planning must be realistic.

What to watch out for

The agency provides information and contacts but does not handle legal, tax or accounting questions for the company. Entering a market or investing requires independent professional advice, particularly on tax, employment and the investment structure.

Support programmes change with political priorities and budgets. Before planning, check the current offer and conditions rather than relying on information that is several years old.
