What it means

A workplace accident is an injury while performing work tasks or in direct connection with them. An injury commuting to work is not one; an injury on a business trip usually is.

The employer must record it, establish the cause, take measures and, in more serious cases, report it to the labour inspectorate and the insurer within set deadlines.

What separates it from an occupational disease is suddenness. An accident is a brief external force that harms health at once, while an occupational disease develops from long exposure to a workplace risk such as noise or dust. Nor is it a workplace accident when the injury happens during something the employee was doing for themselves, even on site and in working time.

How it works in practice

Statutory accident insurance means the Social Insurance Agency pays for pain, lost earnings and related claims. The employer pays compensation for the first days as with ordinary sick leave.

Documents decide: the accident record, witness statements, evidence of training and the attendance record confirming the person was working then.

Employer accident insurance is paid by the employer alone and nothing is deducted from wages for it. During sick leave after a workplace accident the Social Insurance Agency pays an injury supplement on top of sickness benefit, so in payroll we flag that absence separately and keep a copy of the accident record with the payroll documents.

What to watch out for

Without valid training or a risk assessment the insurer can claim back the benefits it paid from the employer. Saving on training returns as a recourse claim.

Firms often assume a workplace accident does not need handling for a casual worker on an agreement. That worker is covered by accident insurance too, and the employer is liable to them in the same way. An injury logged as a fall at home by arrangement with the employee comes back later as a compensation dispute with no record to protect the employer.
