What it means
SK NACE is the Slovak statistical classification of economic activities, which assigns each company a code for its main activity. It is based on the European NACE classification and divides the economy into sections, divisions, groups and classes, such as construction, trade or accounting and auditing activities.
The Statistical Office assigns the code on registration according to the predominant activity. It is not the same as the registered scope of business: a company may list many activities, but statistically it is classified by the one generating the most value added or revenue.
The classification is updated periodically to reflect new industries such as digital services. Linked to it is the classification of products, which is used, for example, when assessing construction work for VAT purposes.
How it works in practice
SK NACE codes are used in statistical reporting, in grant applications, where programmes often support only selected sectors, and by banks and insurers assessing sector risk. A wrong code can exclude a company from a call it would otherwise qualify for.
For the domestic reverse charge in construction, work is classified under the product classification linked to NACE. What matters is the nature of the specific work, not just the company's code, so each supply must be assessed.
If a company's main activity changes significantly, it is worth requesting an updated code. The code appears in registers and in partner checks, and a mismatch with actual activity can look untrustworthy.
What to watch out for
An SK NACE code is not a licence to do business. A trade licence or other authorisation is required regardless of statistical classification, and conversely the code does not trigger obligations that the law ties to a specific licence.
In grant calls and incentives, the code may be assessed as at a particular date. Changing the code shortly before an application in a way that does not reflect real activity may be seen as contrived and lead to rejection or repayment of aid.
