What it means

No-code refers to tools in which apps, forms, databases or automations are assembled visually without writing code. The user drags blocks and configures fields and rules in the browser, and the result works as a finished application, often delivered as SaaS.

Typical examples are website and form builders, spreadsheet-style online databases, workflow automation tools and iPaaS platforms that connect applications. They let people in business teams who know the process build simple solutions themselves without waiting for a developer.

A related concept is low-code, where most of the solution is also built visually but custom code can be added for complex parts. No-code is simpler and faster, low-code more flexible. Both are often combined with RPA to automate routine work.

How it works in practice

In accounting, no-code tools are used for example to collect documents from clients through forms, track deadlines, approve invoices or send automatic reminders. A firm can thus quickly automate small processes for which custom development would not pay off.

Before rollout, map the process, appoint an owner for the solution and agree where data will be stored. If everyone builds their own tools without oversight, shadow IT emerges, and the company no longer knows where its data are or who has access.

No-code is suitable for prototypes and smaller apps. As a solution grows and gains users and data, it is worth reviewing regularly whether it still fits or whether it is time to move to a professionally developed system. The transition is easier if logic and data are well documented.

What to watch out for

No-code tools hit limits with complex logic, large data volumes and integrations. Pricing also often rises with the number of users or records, so a solution that was cheap at first can become expensive and hard to replace.

Data in no-code apps often sit on the provider's servers outside the EU. For personal data of clients or staff, check the data processing agreement, data location and export options so that the company does not lose its data when the service ends.
