Edge computing

Processing data as close as possible to where it is created or used, such as in a branch, a factory or on servers near users, rather than in a distant data centre. It reduces latency and the volume of data transferred.

What it means

Edge computing means processing data as close as possible to where it is created or used, such as on a shop floor, in a factory or on servers near users, rather than in a distant data centre. Computation moves to the edge of the network.

The main benefits are lower latency, meaning faster response, and less data transferred. Sensors on a production line can detect a defect within milliseconds on site and send only summary data to the cloud instead of a continuous stream of raw readings.

A related concept is the CDN, which stores copies of web content on servers worldwide so pages load quickly. Modern platforms also allow code to run at the edge, much like serverless functions.

How it works in practice

Typical uses are in manufacturing, logistics and retail: camera systems recognising goods on site, tills that keep working when the internet is down, or machine control where a delay from the cloud would be unacceptable.

For websites, edge computing means faster loading and higher availability because content is served from the server nearest the visitor. Static sites deployed on an edge network achieve short response times without their own server infrastructure.

Most companies combine the edge with a central cloud in a hybrid model. Local processing increases resilience, and in a business continuity plan it can keep critical operations running even when connectivity is lost.

What to watch out for

Many devices at the edge widen the attack surface. Each device must be updated, secured and monitored, and with hundreds of branches or sensors, management is harder than with a single central data centre.

If personal data such as camera footage are processed at the edge, GDPR rules on minimisation and retention apply. Local processing can help privacy because sensitive data never leave the premises, but it must be clear who is responsible for them.
